General Practice

The human body is a varied and complex system, and the number of complaints and conditions that can be treated by acupuncture are just as varied. Acupuncture is part of a total health system approach; a holistic understanding where many factors contribute to and interact with a person’s body and lifestyle, and where a condition may be relived by a combination of changes, or a body’s system completely altered by the variation of one system element.

Acupuncture can relive symptoms of some physical and psychological conditions; and while it may not be able heal a broken joint it can relive the pain caused by such an injury. At the very least acupuncture can bring a patient’s body into vastly better order, encouraging the patient’s own natural systems to heal more efficiently, and improving a sense of wellbeing.

Over recent years acupuncture has become increasingly popular, and modern research has show that it can affect most of the body’s systems: circulatory, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, hormonal as well as muscle and allergic responses. But it might best be understood as part of the holistic approach that understands and deals with the interconnected nature of these functions. The complex nature of the interacting parts of the human body are often best treated with a combination of treatments, often including acupuncture.

Large claims have been made for acupuncture techniques in the past, many with some justification, but with some quite unsubstantiated. This has an unfortunate and undeserved negative affect on the practice, confusing many potential supporters and patients. Acupuncture is not a cure all for every ailment, at least not on its own. But it can be extremely beneficial to overall health, and is very often part of the treatment that leads a patient to optimal recovery.
